Many families believe that they have so few assets that an estate plan is not necessary. This is not true. We often have more assets than we realize, although some assets may become important only after our death. The most notable asset of this type is life insurance. Therefore, whether you consider yourselves a family of substantial means or with little or no assets, estate planning should be done. Social Security Benefit Information The website below is full of very helpful Social Security Benefit Information. You can download the information in PDF, Word, or Text format. The web site includes Briefing Papers that were developed by Virginia Commonwealth University Benefits Assistance Resource Center (BARC). BARC is funded by the Social Security Administration to provide technical assistance and training to the Benefits Planning, Assistance, and Outreach Programs funded under the Ticket to Work and Work Incentive Improvement Act of 1999. http://www.worksupport.com/topics/ssw.asp Section 8 Rent Subsidies Made Simple The Technical Assistance Collaborative, Inc. Tax Credits for hiring people with disabilities Explanations of the tax benefits can be found in the Frequently Asked Questions section of this helpful website: www.dol.gov/odep The tax benefits include the Work Opportunity Tax Credit, which allows employers tax credits of up to $2,400 for hiring people with disabilities; the Small Business Tax Credit: IRS Code Section 44, Disabled Access Credit, which helps small businesses cover the cost of making their businesses accessible, up to a maximum benefit of $5,000; and the Architectural/Transportation Tax Deduction: IRS Code Section 190, Barrier Removal, which allows businesses an annual deduction of up to $15,000 for expenses incurred to remove physical, structural and transportation barriers for persons with disabilities at the workplace. Person Centered Planning Person-centered planning is a new approach to empowering people with disability labels. It focuses on the people and their needs, not on the systems that may or may not be available to serve them. This ultimately leads to greater inclusion as valued members of both community and society. Advocacy and Training Organizations The mission of the Center on Self-Determination, part of the Oregon Health Services University, is to identify, develop, validate and communicate practices and policies that promote the self-determination of people with and without disabilities. The mission of the Oregon Technical Assistance Corporation (OTAC) is to promote full participation in community life for individuals with disabilities and families through the delivery of training, technical assistance, and related services.
